I have been working a lot with AdSense lately in my spare time. I am going to be writing several posts about Google Adsense in the near future. Topics will not only include my findings and opinions on AdSense itself but also span in to other areas such as building AdSense around data-driven features and using AdSense in AJAX enabled Websites. I have many things I want to share with people.

I have worked with AdSense quite a bit in recent years. Some on my own and a lot with a handful of clients who are using it. While I have clients who are doing very well with AdSense, I have never really capitalized on it for myself. That changed a few days ago when I re-designed a Website I personally own.

Now, you may get the impression that the layout of the Website mentioned above has produced well with AdSense. It is a good impression to have :) If you want to implement the same layout on your Website - be my guest! However, let me make a couple of quick points.

Where a user is apt to click on an AdSense ad seems to vary by Website industry. Given that my Website deals with the outdoors, someone else who has an outdoor Website may find this layout works well for them as well. Someone in a completely different industry may find the exact same implementation does not work. You do not see OutsideTheCode.com with the same AdSense layout do you? I tried it here for a few weeks. It bombed.

A few months ago, I discussed Google AdSense in Niche Markets. I definately still agree with most of the things I mentioned in that post. All that being said, I have kept at it and there have been some new awakenings. If you think it is easy - it isn't. If you want to monetize Google AdSense on a Website that is rich in content then it takes a lot of time not only to produce that content but to trial and error your campaigns.

I would tell anyone that if you are truly serious about getting an effective AdSense campaign going then you have to work on content first. How far you can go with AdSense won't be known until you really have a lot of things to build around. Then you need to figure out how to build around them as click rates vs. ad position varies per Industry. Some may find it varies per Website.

I do not claim to be Mr. AdSense expert. I just like to share my findings with others as so many others have shared their opinions with me. Given the amount of different Websites that I have worked with AdSense on, I do believe that others will find some of my information useful, especially building data-driven and/or AJAX enabled Websites that employ Google AdSense. At least it is a start of some kind for those with campaigns in limbo or just curious about using AdSense.

I have many things I want to discuss in coming days so......... stay tuned folks.
