The other day I taked about letting your search engine ranking come to you. I also mentioned the unpredictable, rapid changes your rankings can see in this day and age.

Let Your Search Engine Rankings Come to You
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
I get around to talking about Search Engine ranking and optimization every now and again on OTC because it comes up so often with small businesses and entrepreneurs. Many of them have expectations that are seemingly like demands at times that they are going to be #1 in Google. At times, search engine ranking is difficult to talk about with people because they only want to hear what they want to hear.

Yahoo Reaches Out to Microsoft. Open Source to Take a Blow?
Monday, July 14, 2008
In what is becoming an entire season of Melrose Place, Yahoo is reaching out to Microsoft to get a deal done. Basically, their is some internal sparring at Yahoo at the moment, which is playing right in to Microsoft hands. In addition, Yahoo seems like they are finally ready to get out of Internet land. The folks in Open Source land may take a blow.

The Best FREE Textbox Editor on the Market
Sunday, July 13, 2008
The other night (yes I work at night) I was in need of a Text Box Editor for a Website I am working on. I have used them in the past and there are several of them on the market that are free. Never really liking any of the ones I have tried before, I expected to get the same old Google results. #1 in the list was the #1 Textbox Editor I have seen to date - FreeTextBox.com

Wanna Give Yourself a Headache? Try the MSNBC Website.
Sunday, July 13, 2008
The other night I ended up on the MSNBC Website. Don't ask me why. I can't remember. Low and behold someone is up on technology as the MSNBC Website is now chock full of AJAX for dynamic Website viewing. A dynamic headache soon followed.

Faster Search Engine Indexing
Friday, July 11, 2008
I always link my clients up from my home page when they come onboard or their Website is completed. One thing I have noticed in the past couple of years is how fast a new clients Website will appear in search engines when linked from the home page of my Company Website. Usually within one week, their Website will appear in Google.

Domains Everywhere
Thursday, June 26, 2008
Several people own several different domain names. Often times they have been purchased with many different registrants. Over time, the email addresses they were registered with become disabled. Then you must fax in letters with identity information such as a drivers license just to get the email addresses on file updated.

Mixed Bag Development
Friday, June 20, 2008
Every so often I will get requests such as this: "We want to build a Website that has a custom ECommerce store. We need a logo built and a few other graphics. We also want to use FLASH on the home page. Can you do all of that?" The answer would be no. I, by myself, cannot do all of those things because I do not build graphics nor can I do FLASH. I got you covered on the programming for the ECommerce store but I would need to bring in someone to do the graphics and someone else to do the FLASH.

Using CMS to Mask Actual Web Development
Thursday, June 19, 2008
I have dealt with this a couple of time recently so I thought I would blog it. There seems to be a handful of ISPs or fly-by-night developers out there who are using Content Management Systems (CMS) as a way of offering Website design without explaining to the client that they are using it in order to offer rock bottom prices for design a canned CMS program is used.

Does the Cutting Edge Cut-Out End Users?
Thursday, April 03, 2008
I recently wrote this article for OTC about AJAX programming. As I wrote it, I could not stop from hearing my own voice inside of my head, over and over again, telling me: Straight-forward is always best, Websites should always be built to benefit end users, and how much I hate the phrase "the cutting edge of technology"

Web 2.0 = Internet Users 2.0
Monday, March 17, 2008
You see this term cropping up everywhere these days - Web 2.0. Many people are trying to define what is actually means while others believe it is a new technology to build Websites with. The thing about the new paradigm of Web 2.0 that is hilarious is how it has little to do with technology and has more to do with Internet users.

Serious Players Need Serious Payment Solutions
Friday, February 29, 2008
When considering a new Website or expanding a Website to accept credit cards, you will often see people turn to message boards and ask the community about processing plans. These people will tend to reach out to others in their own realm. Thus, if they are entrepreneurs just getting started then they will reach out to other entrepreneurs just getting started. Much of the advice you see posted is just not good advice.

Thursday, February 28, 2008
A consumer action law firm by the name of Kabateck, Brown, & Kellner has filed a class action lawsuit against Network Solutions for Domain Front Running. Design Width: Fixed Width or Play the Percentages?
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
PCS have come a long way in recent years and now there is so much variation between them that what a user is actually going to see can be as wide open as ever. Computers, like my Dell, now offer resolutions as large as 1680 x 1050 and they are optimized for viewing at that large of a resolution. If I lower my resolution, I get warnings that my computer is optimized for 1680 x 1050 and that is easy to tell as Websites look blurry when going much lower than that.
