There Must Be 50 Ways to Trick Your Customers

If there was ever an example of big business taking advantage of people it has to be the domain registrars like Network Solutions and GoDaddy. If you have bought a domain name from them in recent times then you know what I mean. Can you just go there, find your domain, and simply go to a screen and pay? No. Instead, you have to scroll through screen after screen of scare tactics that are truly aimed at taking advantage of people.

You will see a slew of additional services that are crammed on these pages in a distracting fashion that try to scare people in to buying something they do not need, confusing people in to buying something they do not need, or that cause someone to make a mistake and accidentally check a box for a service that costs extra that is not needed.

This is what happens when you have a service that people 100% need. Many amateurs who want to start a Website will try and buy their domains themselves and fall victim to these scams. They simply do not know what these services are and think things like, "If I do not buy this then I can't have email or my domain name will not work." Even I have to be careful when using their checkout services to make sure I did not accidentally check a box or they checked one for me. They also like to default boxes to the most expensive domain contracts. If you are in a hurry then watch out.

I have had a couple of clients who have tried to renew their domain names and were successfully duped in to buying email services and moving their DNS which caused their email and Websites to go down. Then they had to bicker with them for their money back.

My best advice to anyone is to find a developer or someone else who is astute with Websites and domains to buy your domain name for you. That way you don't spend extra money on services that you do not need that the registrars will try and trick you in to buying.
