Yahoo Reaches Out to Microsoft. Open Source to Take a Blow?

In what is becoming an entire season of Melrose Place, Yahoo is reaching out to Microsoft to get a deal done. Basically, there is some internal sparring at Yahoo at the moment, which is playing right in to Microsoft hands. In addition, Yahoo seems like they are finally ready to get out of Internet land. The folks in Open Source land may take a blow.

If a deal goes down, there will be many facets of the company that are split, eliminated, or sold off. For an in-depth look at the complexity of a merger, check out Microsoft-Yahoo: What Will Stay And What Will Go? by Duncan Riley from last February when both sides failed to agree on a price.

Yahoo is heavily behind Open Source development, something that is "not so much" in Microsoft circles nor supported by Microsoft. If Microsoft lands Yahoo, Open Source will lose it's biggest backer. Many of the Yahoo development tools offer coding support for the largest Open Source development language - PHP. You won't see Microsoft supporting their tools with PHP. Where and what becomes of things like Yahoo Maps is uncertain. Microsoft will certainly offer their mapping technology - Live Maps.

With so many people using languages such as PHP to develop apps with Yahoo's tools, it has kept PHP and the Open Source platform alive and kicking through the years. Losing a giant like Yahoo will come at a blow not to mention that the Yahoo Website will be replaced with tools that are, and will be, integrated exclusively with Microsoft .NET.

One big question mark will be the future of Yahoo Maps. Yahoo has some pretty hefty contracts with NAVTECH and TeleAtlas who they lease the mapping data from that powers their mapping tools. It is unlikely Microsoft will want to take on those contracts. God knows if another not-so-well-known company out there would be willing to take over Yahoos mapping technology with that much overhead.

Microsoft may be in a position to finally get more in to the Internet game and expand on the popularity of not only their competing tools, but development on the .NET Framework as well. Microsoft have made .NET the most used development technology for Websites but PHP has always been able to hang on. You gotta believe this is going to hurt if the two sides can work out a deal.
