Web 2.0 = Internet Users 2.0

You see this term cropping up everywhere these days - Web 2.0. Many people are trying to define what it actually means while others believe it is a new technology to build Websites with. The thing about the new paradigm of Web 2.0 that is hilarious is how it has little to do with technology and has more to do with Internet users.

Just for the sake of conversation, lets define what Web 2.0 is. It is not that hard. Web 2.0 is the new Internet. An Internet where video is readily available, Websites are community driven, and information is more available than ever before. Yet what has really changed? I have never known the Internet to be any different.

I have always held the opinion that the Internet is five years ahead of itself. There may not be such a gap in this day and age but I think that is what we are really talking about when it comes to Web 2.0. The peeps have finally caught up.

First and foremost, the aspect of Web 2.0 does not exist without a high number of Internet users having high-speed Internet connections. That is one thing that has really held back the kinds of Websites you see these days. You often will see YouTube.com mentioned in articles about Web 2.0. People will state how YouTube.com's video technology revolutionized the Internet. Really? I can tell you an industry that has streamed videos to people for years - Pornography. While many Website pioneers dreamed of the day that the Web could stream all sorts of media content, the porno industry proved that if people want something bad enough they will do what it takes to get it.

While porno companies were able to capitalize on the addicted sickos of the world, most of us had to wait to until the rest of the world caught up. Internet connections were slow, it took people years to overcome the fear of paying for items online, and it took years for people to lose their shyness about participating on community driven platforms. Certainly the younger generation that were barely old enough to walk when the Web took off have helped significantly and have probably done a world of good in getting the older generation involved. Remember when you had to teach your Mom & Dad how to use the VCR? You knew more about it then they did and they learned from you.

The features of Web 2.0 are features that could have been built years ago and did exist years ago in certain arenas. However, the lack of people to use them combined with poor ways of viewing them left the Internet industry waiting until the people caught up. Computers have certainly gotten better and Internet technology has certainly involved to allow programmers to do more but it always has.

When we talk about Web 2.0, we are talking about nothing more than the common, everyday Internet user being more willing, able, and capable of using the Web. The things you see are not new. They are just now possible.
