Target Topic: The Release of the Cuil Search Engine.
Factual and opinionated.
Making major news this morning is the launch of a brand new search engine by a handful of former
Google employees.
Cuil
was built by
Anna Patterson
who worked at Google from 2004 through 2006 and created Google's GoogleTera indexing
archive and also was in charge of
Google Base.
Prior to that she wrote and sold the Recall Search Engine to the
Internet Archive.
Obviously, she has extensive experience in searching technologies.
With over 30 mil in venture backing, Cuil asserts itself as taking aim at Google.
That will be a big task as Cuil only has searching at this time. No ads, maps,
or other secondary features. That being said, one could also argue that Google
has distracted themselves from focusing exclusively on searching. If Cuil does
just that with the mind behind the program and the funding then they may be able
to make a run at them.
The Website is having a hard time loading today with many requests timing out. That may be
due to the amount of heat the Website is getting with every major news outlet covering
them all at once.
A black Website. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Black Websites are normally synonymous with
music, porn, or topics from the darker side of life. The use of black surprises me
a little.
Cuil claims to already have 120 billion Web pages indexed. Yet, I am unable to find
pages from Websites that have existed for years. It is hard to tell why with the
company being so new so I will give them a hall pass on that and try again in a week.
Many people, like myself, are going to point out their weaknesses at first glance but
give it time. Nothing is automatically perfect. When was the last time you can
recall the launch of a new Search Engine?
